The impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on learning and academic integrity has been extensively discussed among educators. Information about the way students use these tools and their perspectives on the use of AI for academic purposes is limited. Students were asked to write a paragraph about a specific topic and were encouraged to use AI. They responded to a questionnaire related to their perceptions about AI and how they used it. This study will help educators create more robust policies, set clearer expectations about the use of AI, and optimize the use of AI in class to improve student’s learning.

Hello, this is Adalvan Martins and I am going to present “Students’ Perspectives on Artificial
Intelligence in Higher Education”. Educators have been actively discussing the use of AI in
higher education. We believe that it is also important to bring this discussion to the students.
Knowing students’ perspectives on AI and how they use it can help educators with classroom
policies, setting expectations, and improving learning.
The students were asked to write a paragraph on a specific topic and were encouraged to use
AI tools. After that, they completed a questionnaire designed to gather information on their
perspectives and use of AI.
Students have similar views on AI compared to educators. They are mostly afraid of learning the
wrong content from AI and ethical issues. Most students, especially students with attention
deficits, view AI as a tool to enhance learning, citing benefits like simplifying complex concepts,
providing feedback, and aiding in assignments. Students agreed that AI should not replace
critical thinking or problem-solving activities and that it is the faculty's responsibility to design
assignments to prevent AI use. Some contradictory responses showed a lack of familiarity with
AI among some students.
In conclusion, students see AI as a potent educational tool but they emphasize the importance
of oversight. As for educators, we need to explore this subject more in class so students get
advice and learn about our expectations on AI use for academic purposes.
